Unfinished Solid Hardwood Flooring
Select and Better Grade
Red and White Oak Select and Better Grade, Hardwood Flooring contains extremely slight variations in color created by the minor differentiating contrasts of heartwood and sapwood. Hickory and Maple flooring in this grade will have clean heartwood and sapwood with an allowable 5% of small, tight knots, and short mineral streaks. Walnut will be mostly heartwood but will contain some sapwood. Almost completely free of knots and mineral streaks. The flooring will have a four-sided tongue and groove for ease of installation.
#1 Common Grade
Red Oak, White Oak, Hickory, Maple, and Walnut #1 Common Grade Hardwood Flooring has more color and grain variation then select and better grade. This grade will contain slightly more differences in coloration from board to board produced by the contrasting variances of heartwood and sapwood. Also, #1 Common Grade has limited small knots and short mineral streaks sporadically throughout the hardwood flooring. This flooring provides a minimal “Character” look to the overall appearance. The flooring will have a four-sided tongue and groove for ease of installation.
#2 Common Grade
Red Oak, White Oak, Hickory, Maple, and Walnut #2 Common Grade Hardwood Flooring will have a more overall “Rustic” look than higher grades. This grade will contain natural variations including big knots, small percentage of pocket knots, mineral streaks, and a shorter average board length, along with prominent color variations from board to board. This flooring has a more “Rustic” look to the overall appearance. #2 Common Grade is most desirable for applications where numerous notable character marks and prominent color contrast is present. The flooring will have a four-sided tongue and groove for ease of installation.
This grade of flooring is great for those wanting the character look without being too rustic. The Character Grade Flooring Hardwood Floor Depot offer comes in 2′-10′ Random Lengths. This grade of flooring has a longer average length than even our select grade. Our 2′-10′ Random Length flooring will have an Average Board Length of 5-5 ½ feet.
Our Character Grade of wood flooring we have is an 80/20 mix of #1 Common and #2 Common Grade. The 80% is #1 Common Grade which has small knots and small mineral streaks sporadically throughout the flooring. The 20% is #2 Common Grade which has larger knots and mineral streaks than #1 Common. The flooring will have a four-sided tongue and groove for ease of installation.
#3 Common/Utility Grade
Red Oak, White Oak, Hickory, Maple, and Walnut #3 Common Grade Hardwood Flooring (also known as Utility Grade) is great for low budget situations. This lower grade of flooring has a progressively lower average board length than Select and Better or #1 Common Grade. The material is bundled in 1′-7′ Random Lengths, and you may get some 6′-7′ length boards, however, we prefer to give a more accurate description and let you know to expect 1’ – 5’ lengths with an average board length of 18-20″. This grade of flooring will include all of the Wood Species natural characteristic and marks including both small knots, large knots, some pocket knots which can be easily filled with matching wood filler. Also, there might be some boards that may have a broken tongue or groove, short split, or a minor crack on the butt joints that will need to be squared off. This is a value-based product that will require a little extra work but leaves you with a beautiful “Worn Rustic” looking floor.
Prefinished Solid Hardwood Flooring
Superior or Premium Grade for imports or exotics, like Brazilian Cherry, are uniform in appearance with natural color variations per each species. Premium grade will have the longest average lengths and is also known as Superior Grade, “A” Grade, and/or First Grade. Many of our Premium exotics or imported hardwood flooring come with a 50 Year Warranty. NOTE: Mills in Brazil are not sorting for a “clear grade” and have not since 2007. If you have questions about this, please call and we will give you the true details. The flooring will have a four-sided tongue and groove for ease of installation.
Select & Better Grade
Select and Better Grade’s characteristics are very similar to the Premium Grade but will include more color variation from board to board and a slightly shorter average board length. It’s difficult for some people to even notice a major difference between the two grades of flooring. Many of our Select and Better Grade exotics or imported hardwood flooring come with a 50 Year Warranty. The flooring will have a four-sided tongue and groove for ease of installation.
Character Grade hardwood flooring has characteristics including small to medium sized knots, mineral streaks, and color variations from board to board due to a mix of natural heartwood and sapwood. Character Grade flooring might contain a small percentage of Rustic Grade flooring with the lighter colored species of woods showing more color variations. The flooring will have a four-sided tongue and groove for ease of installation.
Rustic grade has medium to large tight knots, small to large mineral streaks, and some open knots (most of which have been prefilled before finishing but not all). Rustic Grade has the most pronounced variation in color throughout the whole floor. Other names for Rustic Grade used in the flooring industry are Mill Run, Utility Grade, #3 Common Grade, and “C” Grade. Prefinished Rustic hardwood flooring can include, but is not limited to defects including: splits, shake, and a shorter average board length. Depending on the flooring look you are trying to achieve the recommended waste factor is between 15%-20%. Rustic Grade is great for small or low budget projects looking to include hardwood flooring.
